Among the new products introduced at Apple’s “Future Time” event, which was broadcast on the internet on the evening of September 7, are the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, as expected. The iPhone 14 Pro series has some differences and advanced features compared to the basic iPhone 14 models.
Both phones have a pill-shaped hole at the top of the screen, replacing the notch we saw as a result of the new design that Apple first introduced with the iPhone X in 2017. The faster-running A16 Bionic chip and the always-on display are also among the features unique to Pro models.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has described the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max as “our most innovative Pro series ever”.
The first design change that attracts attention in the iPhone 14 Pro models is the screen. While Apple will offer 6.1 and 6.7-inch options just like its predecessors, the notch is being replaced with a pill-shaped hole to house the Face ID components and a second circular hole for the front camera.
Apple moved the proximity sensor to the back of the screen and notifications now pop out of the hole with an animation. Apple calls this system Dynamic Island. Notifications and alerts will move around the pill-shaped notch and adapt accordingly. Apple drew attention to how it animate and use the system for new notifications.
Both the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will feature an always-on display that works with the new lock screen widgets feature in iOS 16. Viewing Information such as reminders, calendar events, and weather will be displayed without the iPhone’s screen having to wake up. There’s even a sleep state that will dim the iOS 16 wallpapers to use less battery power.
The iPhone 14 Pro comes with modest updates on top of the iPhone 13 Pro, which has innovations such as a 120 Hz high refresh rate ProMotion display and a completely renewed triple camera.
iPhone 14 Pro models feature Apple’s A16 Bionic chip. With its new chip, Apple focuses on power efficiency, display and camera. The six-core CPU includes two high-performance cores that use 20 percent less power and four efficiency cores that use one-third the power of the competition.
This new A16 chip helps power the fluid animations found in Dynamic Island. It also powers Apple’s new camera system. For the first time on the iPhone, we see the transition from a 12-megapixel sensor to a 48-megapixel sensor. The new main camera offers improvements in low-light photography by using a quad-pixel sensor, all with f/1.78 aperture and 24mm focal length.
iPhone 14 Pro camera features
For most photo shoots, the sensor will take dual 12-megapixel photos to maximize light capture. This also allows Apple to crop the sensor in different ways to achieve true 2x zoom at the 48mm focal length. This will result in some impressive photos. Moreover, Apple says that the new sensor even optimizes details in ProRAW format. On the other hand, the new ultra-wide camera offers improvements in macro photography and a 3x improvement in low light. Besides these, Apple has improved the flash in the iPhone 14 camera system so that it is twice as bright and responds to the focal length of the photos.
For those interested in shooting video, iPhone 14 Pro offers features to meet many needs. Cinematic mode now allows shooting in 4K at 30fps and 4K at 24fps.
