Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental Earns 75-Year Longevity Award from SC&RA

Seventy-five years ago, the organization that would become the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) was born, and Dawes Rigging and Crane Rental, a member of the ALL Family of Companies, was there as one of eight charter members.

Dawes has been formally recognized for this, earning its 75-year longevity award. In addition, the branch was honored with safety awards for crane operation and transport.

The beginnings of SC&RA reach back to 1947, when it was founded as part of the Local Cartage National Conference (LCNC) of the American Trucking Associations (ATA). The following year, the Heavy Haulers, Machinery Movers and Erectors Section of the LCNC (the precursor to SC&RA) was formed, with Dawes and seven other companies participating. Today, membership tops 1400 companies located in nearly 50 countries

Dawes general manager Steve Freckmann is a longtime believer in the value of SC&RA, including a decade and a half serving on various committees, with a chairmanship of the crane and rigging group and a three-year term on the board of directors. He currently serves on the Crane & Rigging Group Labor Committee.

“From the networking opportunities SC&RA provides, to ongoing programming, to legislative and regulatory advocacy at the state and federal levels, no other organization has done more to advance our industry,” said Freckmann. “It is truly the central hub of information and action that moves all of us in this business forward.”

In addition to the monumental longevity award, 14 Dawes crane operators received the Operator Safety Award recognizing 10,000 hours without an accident or incident. Driver Karl Jablonski earned the Driver Safety Award for his own 10,000-hour safety achievement.

These individual safety awards have become a regular occurrence for Dawes team members when SC&RA hands out the annual honors. “Safety is an investment in your future,” said Freckmann. “The employees who win this award are proud of the national recognition they receive for their accomplishments. It strengthens their safety awareness and drive to want to win the honor again. Newer operators and drivers see the vests, the patches, and the recognition winners earn, and they want to earn that, too.”

Tour The Flagship Yard

ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. is the cornerstone of the ALL Family of Companies. It acts as the ALL Family corporate headquarters, and is also the company’s flagship yard.

Originally located in a trailer next to the railroad tracks alongside the historic Ohio and Erie Canal corridor, the branch now boasts a 40-acre compound of service shops that support every ALL Family branch. In 1975, the company grew on the site from the trailer to an official company headquarters building. By 2008, the administrative offices of ALL Erection moved to a larger, world-class facility less than three miles away from the yard.

We maintain an inventory of more than 100,000 individual SKUs, up to and including more than 100 complete engines. We specialize in hard-to-find parts, too. Can’t find what you need, or want us to do the legwork for you? No problem! Email us at parts@allcrane.com and one of our parts specialists will get back to you.

The Family Business – THEN

The ALL Family of Companies started small in 1964. The three Liptak brothers founded ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio — with just one crane.

Their rental enterprise filled a need for contractors who couldn’t, or didn’t want to, own and maintain their own equipment.

Over time, the Liptaks purchased more cranes and developed relationships with manufacturers, allowing them to buy direct, first-off-the-line models.

But the brothers didn’t just add to their fleet, they continuously reinvested in their yard by adding special shops for welding, machining, service and maintenance.

Soon, one yard just wasn’t enough. They acquired established crane companies, such as Dawes and Central Contractors, and opened new branches in locations between them. These additions enabled the equipment to travel among branches and jobs, with closer stops for maintenance and parts as needed.

Specialized departments for aerial equipment, towers, and boom trucks were formed and moved to new locations. During the next 50+ years, the small family business grew into the ALL Family of Companies.

The ALL Family of Companies – NOW

ALL’s flagship yard, now 40 acres large, remains home to logistics and the main service shops, still operating under the ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. name. The ALL Family corporate headquarters has moved just a few miles up the road.

The founding brothers’ legacy still impact daily operations, with second and third generations of their family now in leadership positions, supported by nearly 1,500 dedicated employees.

Most of ALL’s employees have grown up in the heavy lift industry, and now share their lifetime of expertise with the next generation. This tradition of mentoring provides more than just tricks of the trade — ALL Family employees have the confidence that only comes from knowing they’ve learned from the best. Customers choose ALL because of the reputation it has earned through these decades of accumulated knowledge and passion for the industry.
